Protect the Sky

Boost our Air Defense!
Our goal is to raise — 330 million UAH ($8.9 million USD)
for Air Defense communications and mobile
command posts.
About the project
Protect the Sky is a joint charitable project organized by the charity foundation Come Back Alive and the Ukrainian postal company Nova Post.
The project is designed to help our Air Defense reduce their reaction time from minutes to seconds.
We are raising 330 million hryvnias to strengthen Ukraine’s Air Defense and equip the Air Force Command “Center” with modern communications and mobile command posts.

Complex Communication Facilities
We will be purchasing new minibuses that are fully equipped with the modern communications equipment to create a robust command system capable of meeting modern challenges. We want to foster ideal conditions for communications specialists and ensure compliance with NATO standards.

Portable Command and Control Kits
The kits are stored in protective cases that can be transformed into modern mobile command posts ‒ in other words, fully-equipped workplaces for air defense crewmembers. Weighing under 60 kg, these cases can easily be carried by two servicemen.

Tele Radio Communication Kits for Mobile Air Defense Squads
Mobile communication kits will provide the air defense mobile squads with a stable and uninterrupted connection to command, better coordination with other defense units, aerial situation data, and the ability to timely identify targets, all of which help to ensure that enemy attacks are neutralized.

FAQ
Who within the Ukrainian Air Defense will specifically receive the aid?

The equipment procured with the raised funds will be distributed to selected anti-aircraft missile and radio-technical units of the Air Force Command “Center”.
The Air Force Command Center is a part of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. It protects the skies over most of Ukraine, including Kyiv and a range of vital infrastructure sites such as the Chornobyl Nuclear Plant and the Dnipro Hydroelectric Station.

How exactly will the project help the Air Defense improve their threat response time?

As part of this project, we will equip the Air Force Command “Center” with tools that will ensure each link in the communication chain stays connected, even if some of them go offline or off-air.
High quality connection translates into timely information exchange, which in turn accelerates response times to enemy missiles, drones, and other airborne threats. We're talking seconds instead of minutes. Such speed is a crucial improvement that could save more lives.

How many mobile command posts and communication units can 330 mln UAH buy?

For security reasons, we will not disclose the specific number of units involved in the project. However, it's important to note that, under the Protect the Sky project, we will supply hundreds of portable command and control kits, as well as dozens of complex communication facilities and mobile command posts.

Why does the Air Defense need mobile command posts?

Modern maneuver warfare and enemy missile strikes on protected but stationary objects necessitate the use of mobile Air Defense command posts.
By establishing an extensive command network that adheres to a hierarchical structure, we enhance the resilience of the Air Defense command. This drastically increases survival chances and minimizes the risks of suppression of air defenses.

Who verifies the effectiveness of the equipment you purchase?

All project ideas were developed and tested under combat conditions by the soldiers themselves. We collaborate with several expert organizations, each of which provides feedback regarding the overall communication safety of the products that we procure and distribute to the military.

Why can't Starlink fully meet the communication needs of the Air Defense?

Starlink is primarily designed for civilian use, not military communication. Its performance can be compromised in dense forest areas or amidst heavy cloud cover. Therefore, to ensure maximum efficiency, the Air Defense must be equipped with a variety of communication tools.

Project Results
As of March 2024, "Nova Post," together with the "Come Back Alive" Foundation, has provided the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine with portable communication and control kits, telecommunication kits, integrated communication complexes (ICCs), and mobile command posts (MCPs) as part of the "Protect the Sky – Boost Air Defense" project.

Since the components of "Protect the Sky – Boost Air Defense" were developed by Air Force personnel and specialists from the "Come Back Alive" Foundation, we were able to significantly optimize costs during the implementation of the project.

In total, 48,877,448 UAH was preserved.

Out of this, 47.9 million UAH turned into 50 pickups for the Air Commands "East" and "South" which cover, among other regions, Odesa, Mykolaiv, Kherson, Dnipropetrovsk, and Kharkiv.

An additional 977,448 UAH was allocated by the "Come Back Alive" Foundation as a part of systematic ongoing support of air defense efforts.

As of July 2024, the "Protect the Sky – Boost Air Defense" project has been fully implemented.
