Homemade Bread Comes in Many Forms: Nova Poshta Delivers Bread Recipes from All Over Ukraine
To mark the 35th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence, Nova Poshta and Yevhen Klopotenko have compiled five unique bread recipes from different regions of the country. Brick bread, sour Carpathian bread, fluffy palyanytsia, rye bread, and kalach—each region has its own distinctive flavor.
Every day, Nova Poshta connects cities and villages with millions of packages, through which people share a piece of home and their love with one another. This time, in honor of the 35th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence, the packages will also include recipes painstakingly compiled by Yevhen Klopotenko: a fluffy loaf from Zaporizhzhia, corn bread from the Ivano-Frankivsk region, a Lenten korochun from Zakarpattia, fragrant doughnuts from the Poltava region, and a ceremonial kalach from Podillia.
“Every Ukrainian home has always begun with bread on the table. It embodies our memories and our roots. Today, when so many of us miss those quiet evenings spent with our loved ones, we want the shared experience of baking bread to become an invisible bridge that unites us, just as Nova Poshta connects different corners of Ukraine. “So that, as they break off a piece of the crust from a hot oshchypka or pampushka, every Ukrainian feels: we’re all at one big table, we’re home, we’re together,” says Inna Popereshnyuk, co-founder of Nova Poshta.
Each of these breads has its own history, flavor, aroma, recipe, and baking traditions. And they’re also part of our national heritage—little building blocks of Ukrainian DNA.
“For Ukrainians, bread has never been just food. It was baked for holidays, used to welcome guests, blessed, and given to people to take with them on their journeys. It was a way of saying without words, ‘I love you and care about you.’ Through this initiative, we’re, in a sense, once again giving Ukrainians bread to take with them on their journeys. Only now, in the form of recipes that will travel across the country along with the care packages. I want them to find their way into different homes, come to life in kitchens, and become part of new family stories. Because the best way to preserve a tradition is to carry it on,” says Yevhen Klopotenko.
